This six-module professional pathway is designed to help teaching assistants grow in confidence, clarity, and impact. Grounded in the High-Impact Teaching Assistant Framework and informed by learning science, it bridges research and real classroom practice. 

 

Throughout this pathway, you will deepen your understanding of how students learn, strengthen your self-awareness, and refine your role in shaping classroom culture. With practical strategies in scaffolding, questioning, interaction, and cognitive load, you’ll learn how to support students in ways that build independence, resilience, and deeper thinking. By the end of the pathway, you won’t just understand what effective practice looks like; you’ll be able to apply it with purpose and confidence, helping every learner thrive.

This comprehensive pathway ensures you have both the theoretical understanding and practical tools needed to excel as a teaching assistant and make a positive impact on student learning. 

This pathway consists of six modules as follows: 

Module One: The teaching assistant I want to be

This course is designed for teaching assistants who want to grow professionally. It is grounded in the High-Impact Teaching Assistant Framework and enriched with practical learning activities that help you reflect on who you are now, the teaching assistant you aspire to become, and the steps needed to get there.

By the end of this course, you will have: 

  • gained familiarity with the High-Impact Teaching Assistant framework. 
  • considered key competencies that define a highly effective teaching assistant. 
  • explored three essential early steps to set yourself up for success. 

This course is designed to guide teaching assistants in reflecting on their abilities, roles, and responsibilities. You will explore how you can create highly effective classroom environments that support student learning and wellbeing. 

By the end of this course, you will have: 

  • learned key concepts of a teaching assistant’s role and responsibilities. 
  • reflected on your own practice to enhance both your capital and capacity. 
  • identified the influence of classroom culture on student learning. 

This course is designed to help strengthen self-awareness and explore the learning theory to enhance your ability to design impactful learning as a teaching assistant. You will explore how self-awareness shapes your role and then delve into the science of learning, focusing on how the human brain processes information.  

By the end of this course, you will have: 

  • written effective questions to solicit feedback to enhance your self-awareness. 
  • learned how human cognition shapes the way students learn. 
  • gained pedagogical strategies and tools to apply in your classroom. 

This course helps teaching assistants understand what scaffolding looks like in practice and how to use it effectively in the classroom. You will explore the meaning of scaffolding and the key principles that guide effective support. This course will show how different levels of scaffolding can be adjusted to meet students where they are, helping them develop independence, confidence, and deeper thinking. 

By the end of this course, you will have: 

  • explored the essentials of effective scaffolding to support your students. 
  • gained practical tools to make a highly effective interactive classroom. 
  • learned how to use higher-order questioning to manage and elevate your classroom. 

This course develops the knowledge and practical tools needed to create an interactive classroom and to go further by cultivating learning habits in your students.  

By the end of this course, you will have: 

  • explored the essential features of effective classroom interaction. 
  • learned how to use Socratic questions to guide students toward more profound understanding and extended thinking. 
  • built an interactive classroom.

This course develops the knowledge and practical tools needed to present learning effectively, model thinking clearly, and build students’ confidence as lifelong learners who embrace challenge. 

By the end of this course, you will have: 

  • learned how to design visuals and explanations that students can process more easily. 
  • explored principles that reduce cognitive overload and focus attention. 
  • identified ways to activate key learning behaviours and metacognition in your students. 
  • fostered confidence and independence in your learners.
